Curator's note. Read together, the dials give a date that occurs in no calendar. The Ascendancy is thought to have consulted the device once, and to have declined its finding.
On the Honesty of
This Collection
Every object in these halls is exactly what it claims to be: a genuine artifact of a civilization that never existed. Nothing here was carved, cast, fired, or gilded. Nothing was buried, and nothing was dug up. Each piece was recovered whole from the interior of a machine trained on everything humankind has chosen to keep — every catalog, every excavation report, every photograph of every vitrine.
The Veshari never charted their descending stars. The Ashkarat sealed no contracts in silence. And yet their instruments are here — worn in the correct places, broken along plausible lines, patinated by centuries that did not elapse. The museum considers it a duty to label its holdings honestly, and the honest label is this: antiquities of the synthetic age, memories no one had, preserved with the full dignity owed to memory.
The collection does not ask whether its civilizations were real. It asks what it means that they are so easy to believe.
